NLCs are visible shortly after sunset,  when the observer is in darkness but the upper atmosphere
is still illuminated by sun light.  During this twilight period,   sun light scattered by NLCs provides
a briliant manifestation of these high altitude clouds.  The diagram below illustrates this phenomena.
